The 10 Biggest Coverage Gaps I Find When Reviewing Online Insurance Policies

One of the most common things I hear is, "I bought my insurance online because it was cheaper."

There's nothing wrong with purchasing insurance online. Many well-known companies offer quality products through their websites. The problem isn't buying insurance online—it's understanding exactly what you're purchasing and whether it truly protects your family, home, and financial future.

As a Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) and independent insurance agent with more than 20 years of experience, I've reviewed thousands of insurance policies. While every family's needs are different, I continue to find many of the same coverage gaps that can leave people financially exposed after a loss.

Here are the ten most common issues I see.

1. Liability Limits That Haven't Kept Up With Your Life

Many people purchase an auto policy when they're just starting out and never revisit their liability limits. Or they don't understand what they mean.

Since then, they may have purchased a home, built retirement savings, started a business, or accumulated other assets worth protecting.

Your liability coverage should grow as your financial life grows.

2. No Personal Umbrella Policy

One of the biggest gaps I see is households with substantial assets but no umbrella liability policy.

A serious accident can quickly exceed the liability limits on your auto or homeowners policy. An umbrella policy provides an additional layer of protection that can help safeguard your savings, investments, future income, and even your home.

For many families, it's one of the best values in insurance.

3. Your Home May Not Be Insured for Today's Rebuilding Costs

Many homeowners assume the amount shown on their declarations page automatically reflects current construction costs.

That isn't always the case. Especially if it hasn't been re-evaluated since before Covid or if you have made improvements and not communicated that to your agent

Building materials, labor costs, and local construction expenses have increased dramatically over the past several years. If your policy hasn't been reviewed recently, your home may not have enough replacement cost coverage to rebuild after a total loss.

4. Missing Water or Sewer Backup Coverage

Water damage continues to be one of the most common homeowners insurance claims.

However, damage caused by water or sewer backup is often excluded unless you've specifically added the coverage.

For a relatively small premium, this endorsement can protect against thousands of dollars in cleanup and repair costs.

5. Valuable Items Are Not Properly Insured

Standard homeowners policies often limit coverage for items such as:

  • Jewelry

  • Firearms

  • Fine art

  • Collectibles

  • Musical instruments

  • High-end electronics

Many people assume these items are fully covered until they experience a loss. Some companies offer limited coverage and only for theft, not misplacing or losing.

Scheduling valuable property often provides broader protection and fewer limitations.

6. Deductibles Were Chosen Only to Lower the Premium

Higher deductibles can certainly reduce your premium.

The question is whether you could comfortably write that check tomorrow if your home suffered significant damage.

A deductible should fit your emergency savings—not simply reduce your monthly payment.

7. Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage Is Too Low

Most people focus on protecting themselves if they cause an accident.

Far fewer think about what happens if someone else causes the accident and doesn't carry enough insurance.

Your uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage protects you and your family when the at-fault driver cannot.

It's one of the most valuable coverages on many auto policies.

8. Important Home Coverages Are Missing

Today's homes contain expensive systems that aren't always covered by a standard homeowners policy.

Optional coverages may include:

  • Equipment Breakdown Coverage

  • Underground Service Line Coverage

  • Water Backup Coverage

  • Identity Recovery Coverage

These endorsements are often inexpensive compared to the potential cost of a claim.

These are newer coverages, if you haven't had your policy evaluated in the last 5-10 years you could be missing important new options.

9. Household Drivers Haven't Been Updated

Teenagers begin driving.

Adult children move back home.

Parents move in.

Household members change over time, but insurance policies don't automatically update themselves.

Keeping everyone properly listed helps avoid unnecessary complications if a claim occurs.

10. No One Has Reviewed the Policy in Years

This is probably the biggest coverage gap of all.

Insurance should never be a "set it and forget it" purchase.

Life changes.

Your home changes.

Your vehicles change.

Your income changes.

Your family changes.

Your insurance should change with them.

Why a Professional Insurance Review Matters

One of my favorite parts of being a Certified Insurance Counselor (CIC) is helping people understand what they already own before recommending any changes.

Sometimes I tell clients their coverage is excellent and recommend they keep exactly what they have.

Other times, we discover opportunities to improve protection, eliminate unnecessary coverage, or even reduce their premium without sacrificing important coverage.

Every family is different, which is why every insurance review should be personalized.

If you purchased your insurance online—or if it's been several years since anyone has reviewed your policies—it may be time for a professional review.

At Fuller & Associates Insurance, we work with multiple insurance companies to help families and business owners throughout Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Delaware compare coverage, identify potential gaps, and make informed insurance decisions.

Our goal isn't simply to help you find a lower premium.

Our goal is to help you understand your insurance and feel confident that when life takes an unexpected turn, you'll have the protection you thought you purchased.
